Chikal Kalo<\/em><\/strong> (or Chikhalkala<\/strong><\/em>) is a monsoon festival that is unique to Goa. It is celebrated on the grounds of the Devki-Krishna<\/strong> temple in the village of Marcel, located in the Ponda Taluka of North Goa. This unique festival resembles world-famous tomato festival and is also known as Mud Festival of Goa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chikhal Kalo<\/em> is unique to the village of Marcel, here everyone comes together sinking all their differences and celebrate Chikhal Kalo<\/em> by singing devotional songs and playing a variety of games. It is believed to have been traditionally celebrated in Marcel <\/em>as a portrayal of baby Lord Krishna<\/strong> who loved to play with his friends in Vrindavan<\/em>. The whole scene takes place in front of the Devaki-Krishna temple in Marcel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Chikhal Kalo – A Mud Festival of Goa is Celebrated?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The festival begins with men from the village rubbing oil on themselves. Fun games and activities are then enacted, reminiscent of the games that Lord Krishna<\/strong><\/em> used to play with his friends during his childhood. Traditional Goan musical instruments add to the festive atmosphere.At the end, sweets, especially puran poli<\/em>, are distributed to everyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival culminates with the playing of dahi handi<\/strong><\/em>. The younger members of the village come together to form a human pyramid. Later, they shatter the clay pot of butter that is tied to a branch of the peepal tree overhead. This festive occasion is a lively and energetic display of youthfulness. All participants cast aside their daily reservations and immerse themselves in the joyful revelry, reveling in the moment with abandon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
