People from various parts of the region flock to the town to receive blessings from <strong>Shree Shantadurga Kunkalikarin<\/strong> during the annual procession. Procession starts from <strong>Fatorpa Temple <\/strong>and is accompanied by thousands of devotees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.hinterscapes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/sotreo-festival-cuncolim-fatorpa-goa.jpg\" alt=\"umbrella festival in south Goa\" class=\"wp-image-1637\" width=\"841\" height=\"664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hinterscapes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/sotreo-festival-cuncolim-fatorpa-goa.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hinterscapes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/sotreo-festival-cuncolim-fatorpa-goa-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 841px) 100vw, 841px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Sotreo Festival of Goa<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Significance of Sotreo Festival of Goa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong><em>Sotreo <\/em><\/strong>festival features a vibrant procession that carries the palki of <strong>Shree Kunkalinkarin<\/strong> along the same route used centuries ago by fleeing <em>Hindus <\/em>who sought to preserve their faith by bringing the deity to <em>Fatorpa<\/em>. During the festival, the idol of the Goddess is taken back to its original site in <em><strong>Cuncolim<\/strong><\/em>. This commemorates the migration of the deity and many <em>Hindu <\/em>families. The procession is led by twelve tall poles adorned with colorful umbrellas, each representing one of the twelve <em>vangodds <\/em>clans in the <em>Cuncolim <\/em>area, with only one red umbrella. Youth participants carry the umbrellas and dance along the entire procession route. As the procession advances, all male participants are smeared with red powder. The procession travels through the vaddos of <em>Molanguinim, Biunsa, Voddy, Tolliebhatt, Markutt, <\/em>and <em>Demani<\/em>, en route from <em>Molangini <\/em>to <em>Fatorpa<\/em>, and culminates at the original site where the deity was enshrined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Village of <em>Cuncolim <\/em>was once home to the renowned <em><strong>Shree Shantadurga temple<\/strong><\/em>. This temple was unfortunately destroyed by the Portuguese in conjunction with Christian missionaries.
