About: The Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utorda was originally a chapel at Utorda built in 1892. The Utorda chapel was then elevated to be a church in 1894. That time it was an affiliate of the parish of Majorda and was later made a parish in 1976. The church is built in a Neo-Roman architecture in white facade with a bell hanging on top of it. The painted glass makes the church more tranquil and peaceful. People celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Patron saint of the Utorda church on 14th November every year.
This church is popular as Nossa Senhora de Lourdes Igreja em Utorda, Goa in Portuguese. It is also popular as the Utorda Church locally in Goa.
The exterior facade of the church, which is rich in Portuguese Baroque architectural elements, is in bright white color to represent Mary, the Immaculate Virgin. The bell from the Augustinian Monastery is in the tall belfry atop the facade at the centre. With its two towers and centrally placed taller belfry, the imposing facade stands out. The church’s design is in the traditional cruciform style, with a nave and a transept. The steps may have been inspired by the Nossa Senhora da Peneda Sanctuary in Penada and the Bom Jesus do Monte church in Braga, Portugal.
