About: Built in the late 16th century by Viceroy Francisco Da Gama (the great-grandson of Vasco da Gama), Viceroy’s Arch is a historic monument that once served as the entrance of Old Goa. The monument was built in the memory of and to honor the achievements of Vasco Da Gama. The structure is made of laterite and is an important landmark even today on the road that leads to River Mandovi. The Viceroy’s Arch is embellished with a deer emblem from Vasco da Gama’s coat of arms. In the center of the archway is the statue of Vasco da Gama. There is also a statue of a lady wielding a sword on the side of the archway facing the city.
