About Reis Magos Fort:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Reis Magos Fort is the oldest fort in Goa, located on the banks of River Bardez across Panjim in Goa. The 15th-century Portuguese fort was once a defence fortress which was later converted into a jail and then a hospital. Ruined and neglected, it was restored and finally opened to the public in 2012. The majestic fort with reddish walls is visible all the way from Panjim. Listed under Goa Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, the Reis Magos Fort regularly organizes exhibitions, displays, performances, fairs, festivals and educational events to promote the cultural heritage of Goa. There are four galleries at the fort – Freedom Fighter’s Gallery, Art Gallery, History & Restoration Hall and Gunloops. The architecture of Reis Magos Fort is a melange of Portuguese and Indian architectural styles. The height of the fort commands a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adil Shahi Sultanate of Bijapur originally built this fort as a military outpost in 1493 by the .\u00a0When the Sultanate was defeated by the Portuguese, a fort was constructed in 1551 as the first line of defence for the then capital, Velha Goa. One of the oldest colonial structures of\u00a0Goa, standing tall and overlooking the Mandovi River,\u00a0Reis Magos Fort\u00a0is one of the most visited tourist destination. As it is very close to Panjim city, one can not miss visiting this awesome fort. One can reach this place even by taking a ferry ride from Panaji city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fort is open from 9.30am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday. Only incase of movie shoots or mega events the fort remains closed . Kindly contact them before your visit. Calling hours:- 9.30 to 5pm only working days. Fort remains closed on Monday for maintainance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owned by the Goa government, the Reis Magos Fort is among the popular ancient monuments in Goa. The 400 year old fort, constructed in the year 1551 happens to be one of the oldest forts in Goa. It is believed that the name of the fort was laid after three men from the Bible. Today, the fort falls under the ownership of the Goa government and finds itself on the list of Goa ancient monuments.
