Goa's tourism minister Rohan Khaunte stated that, the state will celebrate Chikal Kalo as a three-days festival. Several cultural events are held across the state. These rituals are popular amongst locals and hence we need to also showcase these festivals to tourists visiting Goa during this monsoon season.

Chikal Kalo a Unique Monsoon Mud Festival celebrated in Goa

For several years now the tourism department has been promoting certain cultural events, such as Shigmo and Carnival. It also lends monetary support to the float parades. Khaunte said they want to add all significant cultural events to their list and ensure that they are adequately highlighted.

Chikhal Kalo is a religious festival celebrated exclusively in the village of Marcel in Goa. It is a unique blend of devotion and enjoyment, cherished by the locals. This festival takes place once a year on the 11th day of the Hindu month of Ashadh, within the sprawling grounds of the Devki Krishna temple. As the monsoon arrives, the temple premises transform into a muddy terrain, adding to the thrill and excitement of the festivities.

Along with vibrant dancing, the festival showcases traditional games such as chendu fali (similar to cricket) and gilli danda. The slippery mud surface encourages participants to tumble and get covered in mud, which is an essential part of the ritual, giving the festival its name, Chikhal Kalo. People wholeheartedly embrace the tradition, eagerly immersing themselves in the joyful muddiness, and thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Join us for the vibrant and exhilarating Chikhal Kalo Festival, a cherished celebration of tradition and joy, taking place on the 29th of June at the magnificent Devki Krishna temple in Marcel, Goa. Get ready for a day filled with devotional celebrations, cultural experiences, and unforgettable memories!
